Day 6: #TBT – Favorite Childhood Books – What were some of your favorite books way back when? This could be a read from before you could read, or what you spent summers by the pool with in high school.

Oh my. This one will probably be my favorite one to write. I’ve been reading as long as I can remember. Maybe my mom will chime in with a comment someday (yes, Mom, you can do that!! I’ll show you how.) and tell you when I picked up my first book.

IMG_6678Did y’all know that Golden Books are being made available as ebooks? My first bookish memory is the Poky Little Puppy and could very well be one of the first that I actually read. During a convo with the Momma today, she said “Tell them how you read it to me when I was close to giving birth to Kristi & I fell asleep.” So let’s do some math here. I am 2 years and 9 months older than my sister (give or take a couple of weeks). So I was just over 2.5 when I “read” Poky Little Puppy to my mom and subsequently put her to sleep. I’m not sure if that was a good thing or not, but it definitely steers me away from ever trying to narrate a book! (Thanks, Mom. *read in Ross’s somber voice…or Eeyore*)

IMG_6680So Poky Little Puppy was a staple in our house, as were the rest of the Golden Books. In fact, my siblings and I (I’ll include them, but I’m not sure they read as much as I did) loved them so much that we have also the Little Golden Books AND the Little Little Golden Books! Seriously, how flipping adorable?? You can see a small part of our collection of Golden Books in the background too!

IMG_6682Obviously, I couldn’t read about the Poky Little Puppy for my entire life (but I WILL be reading it to my nephew soon) and at some point graduated to the books that most teen girls in the 90s loved. The Babysitters Club was even more of a staple in my life than Poky since I STILL collect the books. One day, I’ll go through and re-read and then review. Because I can. And someday, I’ll have a niece that will get my collection for Christmas when she’s old enough to start reading the BSC Little Sister series. 🙂 Here’s a good chunk of my collection (the first 5 blocks anyways, ignore the last).

IMG_6679Oh! I can’t forget the best childhood book ever. So a few years ago, my mom and I were talking about books. Like normal. She mentioned her favorite childhood Golden Book, Rootie Kazootie. I SCOURED the internet for almost 2 months to find a copy for her for Christmas. Ebay, Amazon, private sellers, EVERYWHERE. Finally, I found a copy on Ebay. I believe it was one of the first prints of the book and I literally screamed when I found it. I’m getting tears as I write this. The look on my mom’s face when she opened that present made all the time spent WORTH IT. We had story time that Christmas. We stopped opening our present so Mom could share her favorite book. Here is her copy that she has showcased on her shelf with the rest of our Golden Books. Love you, Momma!!!

There were several other books during my childhood that had some type of lasting effect on me. Below you will see a variety of the ones that Mom and I could think of today. Plus Saved by the Bell. What? I’m an 80s/90s child. Gimme a break!

  1. I remember reading the Mercer Mayer books. We had all of them. Mom just found some of them (we’ve moved a few times growing up) and kept them for my niece and nephew.
