Bestselling author Zara Stoneley lives in deepest Cheshire surrounded by horses, dogs, cats and amazing countryside. When she’s not visiting wine bars, artisan markets or admiring the scenery in her sexy high heels or green wellies, she can be found in flip flops on the beach in Barcelona, or more likely sampling the tapas!
Zara writes hot romance and bonkbusters. Her latest novel, ‘Stable Mates’, is a fun romp through the Cheshire countryside and combines some of her greatest loves – horses, dogs, hot men and strong women (and not forgetting champagne and fast cars)!
She writes for Harper Collins and Accent Press.
Why do you write? How long have you been writing?
I can’t not! There are so many stories I want to tell, and so many lovely characters in my head. Writing is a bit of an addiction, once you get started it’s impossible to stop – and it’s getting worse. I’ve always written stories, and I’ve always read lots of books, but now I find that wherever I am (walking, on the beach, on a train) ideas come, and I hear little snippets of conversation in my head that need writing down!
Tell us a bit about your current project(s).
I am currently working on a follow up to Stable Mates, called Country Affairs. So if you loved Lottie and the gang look out for more news early next year – and I promise you’ll see more of my very popular, and very sexy, Irish farrier Mick!
What genres do you write? Which do you read?
Most of the books I’ve had published are erotic romances, but my latest novel Stable Mates is contemporary/chicklit/humour!
I read anything and everything really, if the cover and the blurb grab me then I’ll give it a try. At the moment though I think I’m reading more romcom type stories than anything, I love a good story that will lift my spirits and leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling.
Do you self-pub, have a publisher or both?
I’ve done both! I’ve worked with several publishers, including HarperCollins and Accent Press, and have a series of three erotic romance books that I self published.
Is there anything special you’ve got going on right now (or in the near future) that we should know about? Promotions, sales, etc?
Stable Mates is out in paperback today!! (November 20th) It was great to have it out as an ebook, but having print copies is extra special. Readers have drawn comparisons with Jilly Cooper, Fiona Walker, Jo Carnegie and Tilly Bagshawe, which makes me so happy. I grew up reading Jilly Cooper books – she’s one of my author heroines!
I’m also busy promoting ‘Let’s Hear it for the Boys’ – it’s an anthology that I was asked to contribute a short story to, and all the proceeds are being donated to the Movember charities. You can find out more here http://www.zarastoneley.com/lets-hear-it-for-the-boys.html – this is for all the men out there that we love so much! And for a small price you get a fab collection of short stories from nine authors.
Any advice for aspiring authors?
Write the story YOU want to write, develop your own ‘voice’ and don’t give up. Ever! And if your story is rejected, remember it’s not you they’re rejecting, and they’re not saying the story isn’t good – it’s just not right for their list at that moment in time. Lots of bestselling authors collected a lot of rejection slips before they were published.
So, write the best story you can and believe in it 🙂
